Van Gogh
Abstracted

The oeuvre captured as colour, one painting at a time.
Van Gogh Abstracted, Vincent van Gogh paintings reduced to vertical colour palettes

Van Gogh Abstracted captures the oeuvre of Vincent van Gogh not as image, brushstroke or biography, but as colour.

Each painting is translated into pixels and reduced to an abstract palette. The original scene disappears, but its chromatic structure remains. What is left is not a reproduction of a painting, but a compressed witness of its colour behaviour.

The project treats the oeuvre as a measurable body of work. Every painting becomes a vertical band of colour, allowing works from different periods, places and subjects to be compared without relying on iconography or art-historical narrative.

Instead of asking what Van Gogh painted, the work asks what his paintings become when figure, subject and scene are stripped away, and only their colour logic remains.

method

Paintings from Van Gogh’s oeuvre are sampled, processed and abstracted into vertical colour palettes. Each palette functions as a compressed chromatic signature of a single work.
